The Web browser
The World Wide Web is a system of internet servers that support specially formatted documents. The web browser is a software application that runs on an Internet-connected computer that is used to make it easy access the World Wide Web. Internet users can retrive, present and transfer information interactively on the internet . Browsers are able to display web pages in different formats. The two most specialised browsers are:
Kiosk mode browsers and Line mode browsers. The kiosk mode browser are designed easy to use by the public. They can allow limited access to a range of information, they can be operated using robust interfaces , like touch screens. The line kiosk mode browser has a different format, it is generally character-based and unable to display graphics (images, animations etc..).
HTTP defines how messages are formatted and transmitted, and what actions Web servers and browsers should take in response to various commands. It is what allows Web clients and Web servers to communicate with each other. When you enter a Web address (URL) in a browser, this actually sends an HTTP command to the Web server directing it to fetch and transmit the requested Web page and display the information in your browser. All Web servers serving Web sites and pages support the HTTP protocol.
Example: The URL to reach this webpage is
http://cstudies.wordpress.com/
Once you enter the URL
http://cstudies.wordpress.com/ into the address box, the browser breaks that Web address down into three distinct parts.
- The Protocol: “http”
- The server name: ” cstudies.wordpress.com”
- The file name, which follows the server name: ”browser.html”
Facilities of major web browsers:
- Saving pages.
- Refresh or reload a webpage.
- Stop button to cancel/stop the loading webpage.
- Home button.
- Forward or backward buttons trough pages already accessed.
- The address bar and search bar.
- Status bar to display the progress of loading, page zoom etc…
Nowadays we find much more web browsers, the major we browsers are Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari and Opera.
